PRESS RELEASE

DESPITE FALLING SHORT OF GOAL, FIRE FIGHTERS EXPERIENCE ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FILL THE BOOT CAMPAIGN

Monmouth, Or. – Polk County Professional Firefighters teamed up with Polk County Fire District No.1 for another successful Fill-the-Boot campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

In their fifth annual streetside collection campaign at the corner of Highway 99 and Main Street in Monmouth, Polk County Fire Fighters and Polk County Fire District No.1 collected $6,742.77 in two days to assist those affected by muscular dystrophy.  The fund raiser, which kicked off the afternoon of Friday September 17th, was on track to put Fire Fighters within reach of their $10,000 goal.  Despite increased traffic flow on the morning of Saturday the 18th, rain hampered motorists’ enthusiasm to roll down their windows and drop loose change and cash into the Fire Fighters’ boots.  Despite falling short of their goal, the fund raiser was still a success – a success that brings the total raised by Polk County’s effort to over $36,000 over five years.

Proceeds raised during the campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics for people with one of the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases including Lou Gehrig’s Disease OR ALS.  Money also helps send children affected by neuromuscular diseases to summer camps.

Fire Fighters wish to sincerely thank the citizens and visitors of Polk County who graciously donated their money for this most worthy cause.

Polk County Fire District No.1 is comprised of both career and volunteer Fire Fighters, Paramedics, EMT’s, Fire Marshals, and support personnel.

Polk County Professional Fire Fighters is Local 4196 of the International Association of Fire Fighters and a member of the Oregon State Fire Fighter Council as well as the AFL-CIO.

Local 4196 Helps with Holidays

Updated On: Jan 08, 2010 (14:37:00)
For the second year in a row, Polk County Professional Fire Fighters made the holidays a little better and a little easier for some local families. Members of the organization were asked to think of people in the community that they had had contact with in the previous year, and think of a way that the Union could help them out. The candidates could be people they met on calls, people working at agencies that we have contact with, or just someone they have noticed around town.

There were several nominations including a Veteran who was having difficulty paying his electric bill, an elderly couple that was lonely, a recently unemployed mother of three, and another mother who had just experienced tragedy within her family.

Rather than adopt one specific family this year, the Union tried to help as many as possible with the resources we had. Whether it was an invitation to the Fire Station for a home cooked meal, or a few toys for the family, members did what they could.

Polk County Professional Firefighters (fromleft) Chris Paulse, Ben Stange, Jennifer Wagner, and Mike Kissell prepare to surprise a family by acting as Santa.
